James Parker came to language teaching the way many people come to their best work: sideways, through necessity. After graduating in Linguistics from the University of Warwick, he joined the British Council as an English Language Teaching specialist and spent the next eight years working across South Asia — India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan — designing and delivering teacher training programmes in secondary and tertiary institutions. That decade on the ground gave him something no university course could: a deep, practical understanding of how people learn languages under real-world conditions, with real constraints of time, motivation, access, and confidence. The IELTS examination became a particular focus during his time in Pakistan, where he observed hundreds of candidates — many of them genuinely capable English users — achieving scores below their ability because their preparation was poorly targeted. They had spent months studying vocabulary lists and grammar drills rather than developing the specific skills the examination actually rewards: scanning for information in the Reading section, structuring Task 1 and Task 2 responses correctly in Writing, using natural English in Speaking, and following instructions precisely in Listening. James developed a preparation framework that addressed these specific sub-skills, and the candidates he coached using this framework achieved consistently higher scores than their previous practice tests had predicted. He lives in Lahore, drinks an unreasonable amount of green tea, and maintains that the Oxford comma saves lives.
