Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published Children's and Household Tales from 1812 onward, collecting German oral stories from peasants, nurses and middle-class informants. Early editions were violent and adult; seven revisions softened tales for bourgeois parents while preserving Snow White, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin.
